Virtual Servers

A virtual server provides a flexible hosting solution for subversion repositories.

What are Virtual Private Servers?

In a virtual private server (also called VPS or VDS) the host computer system is partitioned in multiple virtual servers thanks to special OS isolation techniques like chroot. The user of a VPS has almost full control on the server. He gets root access to the VPS and he can even change the operating system. A virtual server looks and feels like a real dedicated server but a lower price (and performance).

To host a subversion repository on a VPS, you install subversion like on any dedicated server. You can implement any access method you wish, use any version of subversion you want with your prefered storage method.

The vserver software (http://linux-vserver.org/) provides virtual servers on Linux systems. On BSD, jails achieve the same goal.
